Prepare your planting site. proper weed control prior to planting will
help ensure a successful start for your trees.
Grass, weeds and brush can quickly overtake a
newly established tree plantation. Consult your
University Extension or county agent. Spray in the fall
if at all possible.
How many trees do I need?
If planting for Christmas trees, plant approximately 6? apart, which will require 1100-1200 trees per acre.
Spacing:
For windbreaks, plant approximately 6-8? apart.
For reforestation, plant 8-10? apart, which will require 500-700 trees per acre.
For ornamental plants, a 4x5? planting would require approximately 2,200 seedlings per acre, and a 5x5? planting would require approximately 1,700 seedlings per acre.
What if I can?t plant immediately?
We strongly advise that you plant your stock as soon as possible. If unable to plant upon receipt of trees, try to find a walk-in cooler. Otherwise, store in a cool area, away from the sun and wind, open slightly, and make sure roots stay slightly damp and covered with the shredded paper.
Trees can be hand planted with a shovel, spud, or machine planted. make sure tha the roots are deep in the ground, and that the soil around the tree is firmly packed t eliminate air pockets.
What kind should I buy?
Always take into consideration the type of soil on the planting site, sun conditions, and whether there is good air and water drainage. Some trees thrive in loamy, wet soils, like hardwoods; while others like dry, light conditions, like pines.
What measures are necessary for weed control?
Weed control may be necessary, particularly in richer soils. Trees will be competing with weeds for soil nutrients, moisture, and fertilizer. You may want to eliminate this problem with herbicides and/or mowing. See your local agricultural agent for advice.
