Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of trees should I buy?
Always take into consideration the type of soil on the planting site, sun conditions, and whether there is good air and water drainage. Some trees thrive in loamy, wet soils, like hardwoods; while others like dry, light conditions, like pines.
What if I can't plant immediately?
We strongly advise that you plant your stock as soon as possible. If unable to plant upon receipt of trees, try to find a walk-in cooler. Otherwise, store in a cool area, away from the sun and wind, open slightly, and make sure roots stay slightly damp and covered with the shredded paper. Trees can be hand planted with a shovel, spud, or machine planted. Make sure that the roots are deep in the ground, and that the soil around the tree is firmly packed to eliminate air pockets.
What measures are necessary for weed control?
Weed control may be necessary, particularly in richer soils. Trees will be competing with weeds for soil nutrients, moisture, and fertilizer. You may want to eliminate this problem with herbicides and/or mowing. See your local agricultural agent for advice.
What are bare root seedlings?
We sell 2 year old bare root seedlings in scotch pine, red pine, white pine, and spruces. Bare root fir seedlings are all 3 years old, with the exception being the douglas fir, which is a 2 year old seedling. Hardwoods and shrubs are 1 year old with some two year seedlings. Our experience shows these are the best combination of value and survivability. Although millions of seedlings are planted direct to the field, best results are obtained by creating a transplant bed. Seedlings held like this for two years are easy to weed and make a great transplant.
What are bare root transplants?
Our transplants are well-branched and have excellent root systems. Transplants are our specialty. We grow them without irrigation to provide you with extra hardy tree specimens. As with any transplant, watering in your stock provides them with a good start. We also recommend Super Gel and Super Spore for dry locations and where watering is not practical. Customers come back year after year for our huge transplants. Our experience in growing transplants produces a tree with excellent survival in direct-to-field planting. They are especially winter hardy. Tree measurements are from the ground up and are very conservative.
What's the difference between Super Gel and Super Spore?
Super Gel is the water retention agent which is also used in the Super Spore mixture to help make a dippable slurry. SuperSpore is the beneficial fungus
Tips on spacing
Think about the tree or shrub as a mature specimen. For conifers they will be over 25´ across, so at maturity, if they were 25´ apart they would just touch. For commercial operations remember that someday you will need to run equipment in and around the trees. In the case of conifers that you will be shearing, leave enough room to swing a shearing knife. I figure at least 8´ x 10´
In the field planting tips.
Keeping the roots moist is critical. Trees can be killed in less than 20 minutes if exposed to the drying effects of wind and sun. Make sure you close up the bag that the trees came in before you leave to plant. Root dipping should be done just before planting
Soaking seedlings and transplants
Nothing wrong with this idea, just don´t over do it. You can drown your trees. I recommend putting just 2-4" of water in a bucket and stuffing newspaper around the stems. This creates a micro-climate which will hydrate the trees without harm.
How come you guys don't send out email shipping info
90% of our customers get their trees overnight, the rest in two days. By the time you get the email, the trees are well on their way.
Can I pick up my trees?
Frankly, we much prefer to ship them. You get them overnight and the special arrangements seem to be a opportunity for a screw up. The cost of shipping trees is in the price. However, if you want to pick them up, give us a three day notice and we´ll see you at the nursery.
Explain the planting zone map.
Planting zones were established to help us get the right plants in the right climates. It is not a hard and fast rule. Planting outside of the recommended zone for a specific plant exposes you to a high chance of failure. Things that can happen if you plant outside the recommended zone include, early bud break followed by a frost, low temperature damage that kills the plant,
Do you ship to CA, AZ, WA, OR?
No, they require fumigation and we don't do it.
Do you ship everywhere?
A long as you are comfortable getting your trees between April 10- May 10, we will ship them.
Do you offer a warranty?
We provide the best nursery stock available and keep our prices as low as possible. As a result, we do not have a warranty our products. There are too many things that are out of our control.
