Product Questions

I planted domestic apple whips this spring and the tops are now over the 5’ tubes. I also have several lateral branches coming through the tubes near the bottom. Would you suggest I trim those lateral branches?
Question by: Jerry on Sep 26, 2020, 7:36 AM
You can remove the lower branches from the apple seedlings. Trim as high up as you would like to start the lateral branching for the remaining tree. The grow tubes will eventually break open where the lateral branches start getting too large. You can leave the tubes on for many years.

When should the tube be taken off? and how is it taken off?
Question by: Ted Widmer on Oct 18, 2020, 2:30 PM
SunFlex Grow Tubes are intended to protect trees indefinitely. The tube is a 4" diameter. Because the tube is perforated, when the trunk of the tree reaches the 4" diameter, it will simply break through the perforations. There is no need to remove the tube.
Answer by: Chief River Nursery on Oct 19, 2020, 10:59 AM
I am concerned that the tube will result in a weaker trunk because the tube is providing virtually all of its support. I buy many trees that have been staked and they are simply too tall for the slender trunks.
Question by: Dana Rohleder on Sep 20, 2021, 8:16 AM
When a tree is allowed to flex and bend a bit, the trunk will grow stronger. The stake is a flexible fiberglass stake, it is meant to bend and move slightly so the tree will grow stronger. The tube is also made of a material that is perforated and lets sunlight pass through. You can see more information at Plantra.com if you would like to learn more.
