Colorado Blue Spruce

Picea pungens

The Colorado Blue Spruce is easily our most popular conifer.  It's a classic evergreen that is easy to grow and shears very nicely too.  The shape is conical and the bark is grayish brown to dark gray.  New growth in the spring is especially blue in color.  Once properly established, this spruce has decent drought and flooding tolerance.  Naturally deer resistant.

We sell the Kaibab variety for their classic look. The colors range from green to blue.

How far apart should these trees be planted? I will be using them to create a little grove in the pasture for my sheep to offer a little shelter from the wind and snow.

The Colorado Blue Spruce will attain a mature spread of 10-20'. This means you may plant anywhere from 5-10' apart. If you have enough space, we recommend planting 2 or 3 staggered rows for maximum coverage. Set the rows 5-10' apart.

Colorado Blue Spruce are magnificent trees that adapt to a variety of soil types and various moisture situations.  This spruce is conical/pyramidal in its appearance and exhibits very dense growth.  Female cones are green with a violet colored bloom and average 2 to 4 inches in length.  As the cones mature, they turn into a light brown color.  This is a classic evergreen.

In addition, we also sell the Majestic Blue variety. This excellent strain produces a higher percentage of "super blue" color - probably around 10% of the time.

Commonly used as:

  • Specimens
  • Ornamental Value
  • Privacy Screens
  • Wind Breaks
  • Christmas Trees
  • Deer Resistant Tree

These evergreens are very deer resistant. This tree makes a good windbreak when planted properly in rows and even works as a shade tree when you are looking to use an evergreen.

Provides excellent nesting, roosting and winter cover for birds who like to take shelter in its dense foliage. The tree provides a food source for squirrels, crossbills, grouse, siskins and nuthatches.
