Hybrid Poplar

Populus deltoides / Populus nigra

The name of the game is speed with the Hybrid Poplar. An extremely fast grower, this cottonless hybrid is a cross between an Eastern Cottonwood and a European Black Poplar. This tree has been known to grow 5 to 8 feet in one year once established. The Hybrid Poplar grows into an attractive shade tree with a heavy, broad crown, silvery-green leaves and smooth bark. For such a fast grower, the life span is over 35 years, which gives you quick cover and gives other trees a chance to fill in in the meantime. This is a good choice for quick tree lines and is a popular choice for sustainable firewood plots. Grows in most soil conditions as long as there is adequate moisture.

We offer these trees as rooted cuttings.  The clone our trees are grown from is the DN-34 clone, a Populus deltoides and European Black Poplar cross.  This variety is recommended by the USDA for its adaptability to all parts of the country, and its resistance to dieseases and cankers.

The Hybrid Poplar can bring woods to your land practically before your eyes. With its extreme growth rate, this makes a good choice for harvesting and replanting for a sustainable firewood plot. This hybrid can be harvested for firewood in 5 to 8 years. This Poplar makes a fair choice for fireplace firewood due to its heat output and an excellent choice for campfire wood. Designed for fast windbreaks and displays great disease resistance. Can handle poor and moist soil conditions, but will not do well in dry areas with little moisture.

Common uses for the Hybrid Poplar include:

  • Quick cover for privacy and tree lines while other hardwoods mature
  • Fast growing tree for a portion of a windbreak
  • Sustainable firewood plot, can harvest in 5 to 8 years
  • Good wildlife value
Hybrid Poplar twigs, leaves and bark are a food source for deer, rabbits, beaver and porcupines. The tree also provides nesting and roosting habitat for a host of birds.

Product Questions

If planting these poplars for a firewood plot, what is the recommended spacing assuming a harvest goal in 8-10 years?
Question by: Chris on Nov 26, 2021, 9:56 AM
Hybrid Poplar may be planted 15-20' apart. I would check with your local forestry department about a specific firewood plot spacing recommendation. Our spacing is primarily for general home/landscape use. A firewood plot may suggest you plant closer together to hopefully get straight trunks.
