Hybrid Willow

Salix alba

Speed is the name of the game with the Hybrid Willow.  An extremely fast grower, this selection can live a long life despite its rapid growth.  The Hybrid Willow is an upright tree with a crown, not a weeping form.  This tree will grow about anywhere there is moisture.  Makes a very quick tree line or privacy coverage.  This willow is excellent for moist locations such as stream banks or low lying areas on your property.

Can these be planted with a standard planting bar?
Do the branches go clear to the ground or will there be large openings between the trees at ground level after the trees mature?

The Hybrid Willow is a rooted cutting. The cutting is the original branch segment. New roots are already nicely established, growing directly from the cutting. A new shoot of growth is also established, growing directly from the cutting. Plant the roots and cutting entirely, deeply into the soil, and much of the new shoot, as well. Keep a few inches of the new shoot above ground, and you'll have a very happily planted rooted cutting! Though it won't be necessary to open the soil wide, it is best to plant the rooted cutting as deeply as you can. The Hybrid Willow grows very full, and can establish an excellent screen. There will be plenty of growth at ground level as the trees mature. This is an upright willow, not a weeping willow.

How far apart should the Hybrid Willow trees be planted to create a solid wind block/ privacy fence?

Since the Hybrid Willow should attain a mature spread of 35'-45', you could plant them from 17-22' apart for your application. This rapid grower should be planted in an area with moist to wet soil.

We offer these trees as rooted cuttings.  The Hybrid Willow is an extremely fast growing tree.  There are reports that some trees have grown nearly 15' in one year with the right conditions.  This tree is strong and withstands extreme weather even though it is a fast grower.  These disease resitant trees will grow in moist soil types and moisture situations.  This is a great choice if you are trying to dry out a boggy area.  These Hybrid Willow trees will also grow in nearly standing water.

Common uses for the Hybrid Willow:

  • Fast growing privacy screen or windbreak
  • Will help block dust, wind and noise quickly
  • Great for wet areas of your property or boggy areas you want to dry out

The Hybrid Willow has minimal wildlife value although birds will use it for basic cover, shelter and roosting.
