Dolgo Crabapple

Malus x 'Dolgo'

The Dolgo Crabapple is a beautiful crab tree that has good cold tolerance and a high level of disease resistance. In spring, the tree is covered with white flowers and its green shiny leaves begin to form. Due to the long bloom time of its flowers, its a good pollinator for many other types of crabapple and apple trees. The Dolgo Crabapple produces a heavy crop of large 1 - 1.5" olive shaped crabapples. These crabapples are crimson in color and very flavorful. The fruit of this tree ripens in August and September and persists well into December. The size and flavor of the crabapple, along with its slow drop of fruit over an extended period of time make this an excellent selection for deer hunting plots.

The Dolgo Crabapple has good Cedar Apple Rust resistance

The Dolgo Crabapple has an upright crown and its branches grow skyward.  While it is a great specimen in the home landscape, this tree will also do well moist woodlands and upland areas that do not dry out for extended periods of time.

Common uses for the Dolgo Crabapple:

  • Attracts deer with its large crabapples and extended drop time
  • Beautiful specimen for yard or acreage
  • The white flowers of this crabapple attract bees for excellent pollination
  • Incorporated as the middle story of a windbreak

The Dolgo Crabapple develops large crabapples which ripen in August and September. These crabapples persist well into fall and drop from the tree over an extended period of time, many times well into December. This provides a steady food source which is great for deer in particular. A favorite choice for deer hunters who plant natural food sources on their acreage. The white flowers on this tree also attract and help the bee populations by providing nectar.
